Reasons:

The Lahore
Offensive:

 On 6th September 1965, at 3:00 am
the Indian forces started an undeclared war in Pakistan. They attacked Lahore
when no one knew about the war.

The internal conflict between India
and Pakistan escalated into a global conflict, causing alarm for the
superpower.

The U.S. used to supply them with
military weapons but during the war, the U.S.
stopped supplying the weapons during the war time to both countries.

The Soviet Union and the United
States united in their stance to stop the subcontinental conflict from
expanding to the rest of the globe. China threatened to intervene and offered
Pakistan military support. The US and USSR exerted pressure on the UN to
establish an immediate truce to keep China out of this war.

The United Nations served as the
primary diplomatic platform for efforts to end hostilities, and on September
23, 1965, a ceasefire was declared.

The Soviet Union then served as a mediator in Tashkent, having maintained its
neutrality during the conflict between India and Pakistan. The Soviet
Government announced on December 8 that Prime Minister Shastri of India and
President Ayyub of Pakistan would meet in Tashkent on January 4, 1966.

The Tashkent Conference took
place from January 4–January 10. Soviet Premier Kosygin received plaudits for
his role as a peace mediator. The main goal of the Conference was to get all
military personnel back to their pre-August 5, 1964 postings by no later than
February 25, 1966.
